What are the best exercises with a bad back and knees?
I have degenerative disc disease in my spine and arthritis in my knees. I took some physical therapy to build my internal abdomen muscles to better help support my spine, but I need exercises I can do that will help me to lose weight and build all of my muscles. It is just very hard to do any sort of a routine with my physical ailments.
Degenerative disc disease means that my spine is basically grinding away. Out of the lower 14 vertebra that were x-rayed, 12 showed serious deterioration, if knowing that helps you think of any exercises. Thanks!
A typical response to experiencing back pain is to take it easy - either staying in bed or at least stopping any activity that is at all strenuous. Depending upon the patient’s specific diagnosis and level of pain, the back pain exercise and rehabilitation program will be very different, so it is important for patients to see a spine specialist trained to develop an individualized back exercise program and to provide instruction on using the correct form and technique.
Stretching as part of a back pain exercise routine
Almost everyone can benefit from stretching the soft tissues - the muscles, ligaments and tendons - in the back and around the spine. The spinal column and its contiguous muscles, ligaments and tendons are all designed to move, and reduced motion can accentuate back pain. Stretching different muscles and ligaments is essential for gaining and maintaining mobility and flexibility. Patients with chronic back pain may find it takes weeks or months of stretching to mobilize the spine and soft tissues, but will find that meaningful and sustained relief of low back pain typically follows the increase in motion.
The most important muscles to target are:

Hamstrings, in the back of the leg, to aid correct posture while sitting and standing, and support the gluteus muscles in the buttocks and the hip flexors and minimize stress on the low back

Piriformis, which run from the back of the femur (thigh bone) to the sacrum (the base of the spine). When tight, this muscle can cause sciatica-like pain, and has been linked to sacroiliac joint dysfunction
*
Psoas Major which is attached to the front portion of the lower spine and can greatly limit low back mobility if tight, making it hard to stand for extended periods or kneel on both knees.

Gluteus muscles of the buttocks which support hip flexibility as well as the pelvis
Stretching should be done daily, perhaps several times a day, to ensure flexibility.

I need to lose 30 pounds, how to do it?
I'm 16 years old and 130 pounds, but I'm only 5'0.
I have been recovering from a chronic illness which has been present for the last 4 years. During this time, my immune system weakened a lot, and my metabolism is at an all time low. I also have a condition where my collagen is disformed, and has led to arthritis. (But that isn't stopping me from losing the weight, I'll try any exercise!) I was basically on bed rest this whole time, and went from 100 lbs to 130 lbs. Now that I'm feeling better, I need to lose it!
My parents are freaking out trying to get me to drop the weight, but they aren't helping me at all! I've been trying everything, from exercise to diet plans, but nothings working!
How should I lose 30 lbs? Any exercise plans? Diet plans?

Exercise For People With Arthritis
Thinking about exercise and arthritis? It is not uncommon for people to show their horror at this thought. For many years it was believed that arthritis and exercise doesnt go hand in hand. However a recent study has revealed that exercise can in fact help people with arthritis. Additionally exercise is becoming a vital tool in managing arthritis. Regular exercise helps in improving the flexibility of the joints, decreasing pain and rigidity in the joints. It also helps in improving the general muscular structure of the body. Besides it brings extra benefits as well which includes, better overall fitness, more self-esteem and lower levels of depression. This article aims to deal with several exercise approaches that can be used by arthritis patients to get pain relief and manage arthritis more effectively.
Range of motion exercises involves trying to move the joints in all possible directions. It is more of a gentle exercise. It needs to be carried out on a regular basis in order to decrease the rigidity of the joints and avoid deformities. This exercise becomes more important for arthritis patients who tend to avoid much joint movement due to high inflammatory pain. It is believed by some people that normal day activities like dressing, bathing, housework are a substitute for ROM exercises; however this is not the case.
Strengthening exercises are used in everyday life to improve the muscular structure of the body, which allows the body to withstand pain more easily. Similar arthritis patients can use this exercise to help build strong muscles, which will lead to more stable joints and less pain. This type of exercise comes in two packages, which includes isotonic and isometric. Isometric exercises are used in conditions where the joint motion is impaired. It involves tightening the muscles without moving the joints. Isotonic on the other hand, involves tightening the muscles in coordination with joint movements.
Endurance exercises involve bringing the heart beat level of your heart to an optimal level for a short period of time. This optimal level of heart performance is acquired on the basis of the patients age and physical condition using computer. It helps in improving the cardiovascular fitness. In order to increase the effectiveness of these exercises, these shall be undertaken around 3 times a week. Carrying out theses exercises helps patients achieve better physical strength and improve mental attitude.
There are several exercises that be can undertaken by an arthritis patient. Walking is an ideal choice. It helps in building strength and improves mobility of the joints. It is also helpful for maintaining bone health. Similarly running can bring about pain relief to arthritis patients. Research has shown that running on soft surfaces doesnt cause osteoarthritis. This is a good option for people suffering from less extreme version of arthritis.
Yoga has long been an ultimate exercise for arthritis patients. Yoga can help bring relief to joints, decrease pain and relax muscles. It is also a good range-of-motion exercise as it includes controlled movements, maintaining pressures, and deep breathing relaxation. However this exercise must be carefully used if the condition is getting worse rapidly and try not to put pressure on the inflamed joints. Cycling can be used as a low level exercise option. This exercise can be carried in either position; freestanding or stationary. Additionally, cycling equipment can be fixed and altered according to the condition of the patient, in order to make the experience easier and less physically imposing.
The aforementioned exercises give an insight into possible ways of improving the health of patients suffering from arthritis. In order to effectives of each technique it is essential to be consistent. The exercise shall be started on a low note and then build up gradually in order to allow the body to adjust to the outside pressure. Also it is important to keep in mind, that each exercise shall be carried within its own limit. Excess exercise during flare-ups can worsen symptoms.
However before the exercise is undertaken, it is important to contact your nearest doctor and seek professional advice as each case of arthritis shall be dealt on an individual basis. This can be help in seeking a more effective approach to this condition.

Any sport/exercise that can be recommended with a person who has arthritis in the knees?
This is a friend of mine, who has always been active and likes sports, but has recently been diagnosed with arthritis in both knees. She was advised to lose weight too, so the knees would not have to work hard carrying the extra weight.
What kind of exercise would be good for someone with knee replacement?
Swimming is very low impact. If she's up for it, water aerobics classes. Sometimes cycling and speed skating are recommended after knee injuries. I'd ask the doctor or somebody at the gym for something that is low impact for the knees.

Exercise Knee Arthritis

I have arthritis in my knees & I get migraines easily - help with exercise ideas?
I can not run due to the arthritis in my knees, swimming is out of the question due to financial reasons - so I walk, but that gets boring. So any ideas for other cardio would be great. Also - need to work on abs but get migraines whenever I do sit-ups. Yes I have had aerobic instructors watch me do them & they say that I am doing them right & not pulling on my neck, etc... but still get migraines anyway. Also get migraines with strenuous cardio workouts. I really want to lose weight, but it just seems that there are obstacles around every corner. So any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Great Exercises for Arthritis Sufferers
Exercise and arthritis are two very opposite ends of the spectrum. Arthritis doesn't like exercise and if you can find a way to exercise you just might find so comfort in those joints that are causing you so much pain.
I know there are times in a day when your arthritis really hurts and that is not a good time to consider exercising. However, there are times in the day that you know are best, would be a very good time to start implmenting some exercises.
WARNING
Never start an exercise program for arthritis without first consulting your doctor or health care provider.
The 3 main components to exercise and arthritis are:
Flexibility (range of motion)
Strength (resistance)
Cardiovascular (endurance)
I'm sure youre doctor will agree that flexibility, strength and cardiovascular fitness would be beneficial for your. But talk to them first they might recommend an exercise therapist to help you fight arthritis using very specific exercises.
Flexibility is often referred to as Range of Motion (ROM). Arthritis wants your joints to freeze up and not move. The less you move your joints the better arthritis can take over your body. If you want to beat arthritis at it's own game, then begin a flexibility program.
Mornings are a great time to begin your range of motion exercises. Something as simple as pulling your knees to your chest can greatly increase your chances of getting out of bed without much arthritis pain.
This same movement will also help your hips get ready for a weight bearing day. If your knees and hips are really bugging you, a simple leg lift in bed will do wonders to increase your blood flow before your feet hit the floor.
Any type of bending and stretching is a very good exercise for arthritis. Key point to remember is to hold your stretch and don't bounce up and down. It's the slow process of stretching and pulling those muscles that will make arthritis mad.
Before you do any type of exercises, stretching is the critical first step. It prepares your muscles for the activities you have planned to do. Daily stretching is most beneficial, but don't think you can replace flexibility with other forms of exercise. You need em both.
Strengthening exercises are very good ways to build up muscle around the joints as well as increasing the blood flow throughout your body. It's that blood flow that really drives arthritis crazy.
Resistance exercises are what you are looking for. Riding a bicycle is a good resistance exercise. That constant pushing against the pedal with your legs will begin to build muscles around your knee joints and many other places. If your knees are bothering you and you have access to a stationary bike, try this.
Remove the seat, sit on the floor behind the pedals and begin peddling with only your arms and hands. This is a two fold process that increases resistance as well as help you build cardiovascular.
The key benefit to a stationary bike or a bicycle, is the fact that you will be able to increase your blood flow to every joint of your bodyand and build strength in your arms or legs. Lifting weights is an obvious choice for a resistance exercise, however there are other ways.
For instance sitting in a chair with your legs bent. Start lifting your legs until your leg is fully extended. Using gravity only, that will help build your muscles around the knees. If you strap on only 5 pounds and do the same thing you've really got yourself a good workout. We call this leg extensions and you don't need a health club to do that.
Another good resistance exercise for your arms is to have them straight out in front of you and by simply bending the elbow bringing your hand back to your shoulder works wonders. Even lifting your arms up and down over your head will enable to shoulders to fully stretch and strenghten. You can add more resistence by holding a 5 pound dumb bell when there is no pain associated with bending your elbow and shoulder.
The cardio exercises that are extremely beneficial for arthritis pain are: walking, biking, swimming. We like to do a lot of walking in water with athletes who are coming off surgeries and progress them along to finally walking and biking. Both build strength and endurance. As you know, cardio exercises are also beneficial to your circulatory system (heart/lungs).
Located behind our town is this hill that I love to walk up. It doesn't matter how much my back or knees hurt, by the time I'm walking up that thing for 5 minutes my body stops hurting and blood is flowing fast. It's the blood flow that really helps stop that joint and arthritis pain for me. I also include in my regular meals supplements that target arthritis symptoms and pain.
As we discussed earlier, walking in a pool is also a great way to decrease the pressure on all your weight bearing limbs. By walking in the pool you are strengthening various large muscle groups around your hip, knees and ankle joints. The upper body also moves quickly to help you walk in the water faster.
Personal favorite exercises for arthritis include:
*Walking on flat surfaces
*Walking up hills
*Riding my bike when my back doesn't hurt and the temperature outside
isn't to cold.
*Walking in pools
*Chasing the kids (grandchildren) in the back yard
There are a lot of different things you can do that does not require purchasing a membership at the local exercise club. Exercise and arthritis in my humble opinion is a mind set and if you get into the habit of doing some sort of exercise on a daily basis, it will help reduce your arthritis pains. When you have pain, use some other part of your body to increase the blood flow, heart rate and lungs.
You'll be surprised at how well it will help reduce your joint pain.

You seem to be restless all day and feel terrible pain during nighttime. It seems endless, the cycle of pain and immobility, not having the means to do the things you used to do and the stress and boredom that go with it. It is a mistaken notion that exercise can further damage your joints. On the other hand, doing moderate exercises have shown significant impact in the overall well-being of patients suffering from arthritis. Patients should of course refrain from doing high-impact exercises as this may aggravate their condition. There are, however, a variety of low-impact or moderate exercises that have shown incredible benefits such as reduction of joint pain and the strengthening of muscles around the affected joint. It has also improved overall health and fitness by creating a healthy self-esteem, reducing depressive symptoms, controlling obesity, improving sleep, and boosting energy.

Water Therapy
Water therapy or pool exercises are great for people with arthritis. Yoga

The word yoga is derived from Sanskrit; which means to "yoke," or unify the three mantras of mind, body, and spirit. This is an alternative to traditional exercise which mainly focuses on bodily strength and endurance. Yoga is a combination of physical movement exercises, spiritual cleansing, and certain lifestyle modifications. It is centered on having the chakras aligned in achieving equilibrium in your holistic frame of well-being.
Pilates
The essential principle of pilates focuses on breathing and body awareness. This program widely promotes spinal health. This can also be customized to fit your need especially if you have swollen and painful joints to begin with. This is done by contracting your muscles without mobilizing your joints.
Callanetics
Callanetics is a non-impact exercise regimen which was developed by Callan Pickney in 1980 that incorporates small yet precise pulses or movements for those who want to shape up as well as improve their arthritic symptoms. Do not overwork your legs though; just be cautious because it might aggravate rather than help if you are not careful. Develop a rhythm and enjoy the walk. You can do this with your wife or husband; it would be a fun and intimate activity for both of you.
These exercise regimens alone would not be a guarantee that your symptoms will be improved. This should be supported by a healthy diet, plenty of rest, water therapy, drinking multivitamins and food supplements, and having a positive mental attitude. You will go places as long as you have faith. It may be a long and rigorous ride, but it will be well worth it along the way.

I'm looking for the Arthritis Foundation, for a grant so they can help me?
I don't have enough income to pay for the 20% that Medicare doesn't pay, so that I can have physical therapy, along with water excercises. My income is at the poverty level, and I can't afford the 'price' starting out at 3 times per week, of which I would have to pay approximately $180.00 per month. And that doesn't count my transporation cost either, which is $2.00 each way, on the Handi Wheels bus for the handicapped. At this time, I'm without any form of exercise. 17 yr old w/ knee pain during heavy exercise?
Hi, I'm 17, and recently I joined the Varsity Boys Volleyball team. I played Varsity Tennis for two years previously, and I've always participated on a decent level in PE. I was very bookish before middle school, and I'm not much of an athlete. Tonight during practice during a fairly simple drill, I started to feel an almost arthritic knee pain. It was a soreness in the joint, followed by a slight stiffness after the drill. I was fine afterwards, and then when I came home, my knees stiffened as I went up the stairs. I have awful trouble with my back and neck, so I'm not expecting much out of this. But out of curiosity, is this a weakness thing that I can be rid of with good exercise, or is it more of a Arthritis that I need to take medication for?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
I'm 13 and I have the same problem. I got it from my dad, but with good exercise it'll probably go away. It does with me.

I want to purchase a dvd or vcr workout tape for arthritis. I have arthritis in one hip and knee, and find it very difficult to get down on the floor to exercise. Any help out there???? Thanks. I also understand that tai chi helps.
