Help For Your Arthritis
The article which you are about to read has been written as a genuine attempt to help those people who suffer from Arthritis. I sincerely hope that you will find the article interesting, informative, but above all helpful.
Your bones hang out in a lot of joints. Knee joints. Hip joints. The joints in your fingers and the joints in your toes.
Wherever bones meet, there is also cartilage, a rubbery, protective layer that ensures your joints bend smoothly and painlessly. But even cartilage cannot do this tremendous job alone. A thin membrane called the synovium provides fluid that lubricates the moving parts of the joint. When the cartilage wears out and the synovium becomes inflamed, the result is generally a case of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
In osteoarthritis, the cartilage can be eroded so much that bone does rub on bone. This type of arthritis develops gradually over a lifetime as a simple result of the wear and tear placed on your joints over the years. Very few people escape some degree of osteoarthritis, though the severity varies a great deal.
As a matter of fact, if you are over the age of 50, you are likely to have at least one joint affected by osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis affects men and women equally and is by far the most common type of arthritis, with almost 16 million Americans in the list.
In rheumatoid arthritis, damage to the synovium is at the source of trouble. Doctors and researchers are not absolutely sure what causes it, but most think that rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the immune system actually attacks certain tissues in the body, including those that connect the joints and the synovium.
Rheumatoid arthritis begins with swollen, red, stiff, and painful joints, but it may progress until scar tissue forms in the joint or, in extreme cases, until the bones actually fuse together. Almost 75% of the 2 million people with rheumatoid arthritis in the United States are women. The disease can hit as early as teen years.
Exercising Your Prevention Options
Investing a little time in developing a good weight bearing low impact exercise and stretching plan can add up to great results when it comes to staving off arthritis pain. Strong muscles help protect the joints from wear and tear, and the movement keeps joints flexible.
That is why the quest for fitness is at hand, even if you are 50 years and over. However, most Americans over 50 are still right where they always were sitting back and watching others jog by. Most of them contend that that is just for people who have been athletic all their life, or some say exercise is for young people and engaging into exercise will do them more harm than good.
Now before you read any further I just want to say that I really do hope that you are finding this helpful. I have written this because so many people want to know more about arthritis and so, having said that, lets continue.
There are still some that insist on excusing them selves in exercise routines because they do not just have time or they have less energy than ever before. These are all lame excuses. Hence, it is time to start to get rid of those pains. Start exercising.
Consequently, preventing arthritis is not an exact science, but physicians have discovered a few ways to lower your risk. Here is how:
1. Do not weight around
The single most important measure anyone can take to prevent osteoarthritis of the knee is to lose weight if they are overweight. Extra weight puts extra stress on your knees. If you are 10 pounds overweight, for example, you put 60 pounds per square inch of extra pressure on your knees every time you take a step. That extra pressure can slowly but surely erode the cartilage in your knees, leading to arthritis.
A study has clearly supported the theory that weight loss weighs in on the side of prevention. In the study, overweight women who lost 11 pounds or more over a 10 year period decreased their risk of developing osteoarthritis of the knee by 50%.
2. Stretch those muscles
Any kind of stretching is good as long as you do not bounce, which can lead to a muscle pull. This is according to some of the professors of clinical medicine in New York City.
Try to hold a slow, steady stretch for 15 to 20 seconds, then relax and repeat. It is best to flex up by stretching before any exercise, especially running and walking. But it is also a good idea to stretch each day. Ask your doctor to teach you stretches that focus on potential arthritis trouble spots, such as the knees or the lower back.
3. Walking is always the best exercise
Take a good long walk at least three times a week or participate in a step aerobics or low impact exercise routine for maximum results. There is no proof that running is bad for the joints, but remember, it may aggravate an injury if you already have one. Just remember to check with your doctor before starting a new exercise program.
The bottom line is that of all the healthful habits, exercise is the most important. This is because people are designed to be active. Hence, it is really important for people to exercise in order to stay healthy and keep those joints free from wear and tear.
Just keep in mind that the unexercised body, even if free from the symptoms of illness or problems like arthritis, is not at its full potential. Hence, start exercising right now!
May I conclude by saying that there is a lot of information available on arthritis which you can find in your bookstore, your local library, or on the internet, so, happy researching

Is Exercise Good for Arthritis

I have arthritis and walking is not on. What else can I do other than ride an exercise bike to lose weight?
My knees are stuffed, so walking isnt a good option for me, but I can ride a bike. I have a road bike and have just bought an exercise bike, so I can use it day or night, rain, hail or shine. I am trying to lose more weight. Given my limitations, is there anything else I could be doing at home to accelerate my loss. I am eating sensibly. Thank you.
I have found that biking, while good exersise, is hard on my knees, and when you are old, a fall can be devastating. I also found that exercise bikes come boring. What worked best for my arthritis in exercise was to find a low-cost fitness center. I would like to recommend Planet Fitness, as they have great rates ($10 per month, free personal training), and have outlets in most cities. You get a chance to have an exercise program tailored just for you, meet a lot of interesting people, and get in shape without being run off the run by cars or chased by dogs.

Reshape Your Biceps With Resistance Bands
The bicep is an important muscle for both women and men. Useful for lifting, well defined and shapely biceps are appealing and look great. There are several ways to exercise your biceps and you can use resistance bands instead of free weights to get excellent results. Many people are turning away from free weights because they are heavy, take up too much space and are awkward to store and carry, while resistance bands offer the same benefits they are much easier stored and carried.
When traveling, it can be difficult to bring free weights to ensure that you continue your bicep workouts. Resistance bands are compact and can be easy to store away in your luggage. Make certain that you do not neglect your biceps workout just because you are on the road. With several bicep exercises to choose from, you can mix up your workouts and ensure that your biceps continue to get the strengthening and toning work that they need.
When beginning any health, diet, or exercise program it is a good idea to speak with your heath care provider first. Those who have had shoulder or elbow injuries, suffer from chronic joint pain, or struggle with arthritis should discuss the use and benefits of resistance training with their health care provider. It is important to recognize the warning signs of pain and never push yourself to the point of injury. Yet, most health care providers agree that exercise is the best way to prevent the debilitating effects of arthritis and other joint related conditions. Use a lighter resistance band when just beginning and aim for 3 sets of 25 repetitions. When you can complete these easily and effortlessly, progress to the band that provides the next level of resistance. Bands usually come in many different colors to show their strength levels so you know what pound each resistance band is.
There are a variety of ways to perform bicep curls with resistance bands, including seated and standing. Choose the exercise that you feel most comfortable with or mix and match routines to ward off boredom. Seated bicep curls can be performed on the floor or mat, in a chair, or on an exercise ball. Standing bicep curls can be accomplished by standing on the middle of the band or by affixing the band to a door or other steady piece of furniture, door, or equipment. No matter which method you prefer, you will find that performing bicep curls is an excellent way to keep the arms toned.
To perform standing bicep curls with resistance bands take your band and place the middle of the band on the floor. Stand on it with feet hip distance apart. Keep the knees at a comfortable bend, not flexed and grip the ends of the bands with each hand, palms facing up. With elbows kept close to the body, bring the hands in towards the shoulders. The key in performing correct biceps curls is to keep the body stabilized throughout the movement. You might find that squeezing the shoulder blades gently towards each other will keep your shoulder area stabilized. Bicep curls are an important exercise and with resistance bands you can perform them simply and easily.

Exercise Hip Arthritis

arthritis and bursitis?
okay the doc said i have arthritis in my lower back around my tailbone (he says not too bad) and the orthepedic specialist said i have bursitis on yhe top of my right hip. I am very active throughout the day (in military). no matter how much exercise i do my back is very stiff to the point where i can barely bend over to touch my knees. my hip really hurts not every day but lately yes its seems its bothering my left hip too. he said it is slight arthritis...my question is to anyone with arthritis even though my arthritis isnt that bad is my stiffness n pain going to be different that anyone elses ? cuz i think he thinks i'm faking the pain n stiffness....
See the doctor and ask for a referral to physical therapy. They should be able to help you with both issues. Bursitis is an inflammation of a sack of fluid that the body uses to keep different parts from rubbing. So the therapist will use ultrasound on the bursa to help reduce the amount of fluid that is in there. They can also use ice on the area which will also help but it will also depend on the depth of the bursa. As for the arthritis they will also help there. There are things that you can do on your own to help matters. One if you are carrying a little more weight than you should drop it. The extra weight is hard on the back. For every one pound of extra weight that you carry the back has to deal with forces that are equal to ten pounds. Flexibility is also important and here is where the therapist is important. They will be able to identify areas where you are weak and tight. Once these areas are corrected then much of the pain will decrease. Most people with lower back problems have tightness and weakness in the hamstrings and dysproportional strength in the calves. These are areas that should be addressed. Strength in the gluteals and back should also be strengthen. When standing squeeze the buttocks as hard as possible. This helps to stabilize the pelvis and reduce pain. Everyone's pain levels are different. The same stimuli to one person can be overwhelming and to another it is nothing. Military doctors have a tendency to think everyone just wants a pass from doing their duty for the day or week. For the hip try doing this stretch. Stand straight and cross one foot over the other in such a way as to place the crossed foot about eight to twelve inches further to the side. Now lean to the side of the crossed foot. There should be a stretch going through the hip. Hold that position for a count of ten and then relax. Do that cycle four more times and then reverse legs. As for the lower back lie on your back. Bring one knee up into the chest and bear hug it into the chest. Hold that for ten and relax but don't let the leg go back to the ground. Repeat that cycle four more times and then return the leg to the floor. Bring up the opposite leg and bear hug that into the chest as before five times. On the last rep do not return the leg but have the opposite leg come up and meet the leg. Bear hug both legs into the chest for a count of ten. Relax but don't allow the legs to return to the floor. Bear hug the knees into the chest four more times. On the last one only bring one leg down to the floor. Place the foot on the floor so that the knee is flexed to 90 degrees. Bring the opposite leg down to meet it. Slowly rock the knees from side to side as many times as you feel comfortable. That should help to relax the back. Doing crunches should also help to stabilize the pelvis. Use ice on both areas for about fifteen minutes every hour if possible.

Arthritis Range of Motion Exercises
Exercises For Arthritis: The 3 Types Of Exercises That Can Relieve Arthritic Pain
Should you exercise when you have arthritis? If it is not because of recent discoveries that demonstrate exercises can reduce stiffness and joint pain, you may not even consider it. Doctors and physical therapists always recommend specific exercises to manage the arthritic pain. Exercises for arthritis consist of range-of-motions workouts, strengthening and endurance activities.
Range-of-motion exercises involve stretching. They keep your joints mobile and flexible to relieve stiffness at the joints. You should perform these stretching everyday if you want to be free from stiffness. Usually, you tend not to move the painful joints. Therefore, these exercises can encourage working on the affected joints to keep normal joint movement.
Strengthening exercises involve weight training. They help to strengthen your muscles. Strong muscles can protect inflamed and swollen joints due to arthritis. They also make the joints more stable so that you can move with lesser pain. Always use the correct postures when executing these exercises. If you carry out these sets with improper posture, your muscle will tear. This will lead to more pain and more joint swelling.
Strengthening drills comes in two types: isometric and isotonic. Isometric activities help to tighten your muscles without moving the joints. They can benefit those who suffer from damaged joint movement. On the other hand, isotonic exercises require movement of joint to strengthen the muscles. You should perform muscle-building sets on alternate days. If you experience severe pain or swollen joints, you should either reduce the repetitions or stop carrying out these drills.
Endurance exercises enhance your cardiovascular fitness and keep your weight under control. When you perform these sets, your muscle will use the calories. Inactivity can cause your muscle to store fats. Your weight can influence the arthritic condition. Excess weight on the joints can lead to more pain. Therefore, weight control is important to manage the painful condition of arthritis.
However, endurance exercises are not suitable for those with long-term rheumatoid arthritis and limited joint functions. You need to choose the right kind of endurance exercises for arthritis to prevent further joint injury.
If you experience pain that lasts for over an hour during the workout, then it is too strenuous for you. Consult your doctor and physical therapist to modify the exercise if you feel any strenuous signs such as consistent fatigue, intensified joint swelling, reduced range of motions, and elevated weakness.
As you can see, each of exercises for arthritis serves a different purpose. Each of them focuses on specific parts of a joint. No matter how painful it is, you can still perform exercises. If you are reluctant because of pain, you can start with water aerobics programs. As the water provides buoyancy for your body, exercising in the water may be a painless experience.
Exercises for arthritis can help you in arthritic pain management. They restore normal joint movement, mitigate stiffness, and improve flexibility of the joint's muscles. You will experience a reduction of arthritic symptoms such as joint pain and inflammation. Before you begin any program, request for a professional recommendation from your doctors and physical therapists. They can devise a suitable exercise program for you to deal with arthritis. They can tell you which exercises are off-limits.

Hip Arthritis And Exercise

I have mild arthritis in my hip should I continue with Karate?
I enjoy Karate, I've only been going one month ( twice a week) but since going I now have hip pain which makes it painful to sit for long periods of time and when I get up from sitting I can just about move. I thought exercise was suppose to be good for you.
Exercise is one of the most important things you can do when you have arthritis. Inactivity only makes arthritis pain worse.
Some times when starting a new exercise program like karate that uses muscles and joints in ways they are not use to can cause pain in areas like your hip joints. This should improve over time.
Also are you exercising other than your karate lessons. Exercising only twice a week can add to your problem. If you have a public pool near you warm water exercise might help you a lot. It allows you to strengthen the supporting muscles in your hip area that are not used in karate. It also does it in a way that does not put pressure or impact to hip joints. Just walking laps around the shallow end of the pool should help alot.
You should talk to your doctor about your pain to make sure that there is not some thing new going on or that the arthritis is not getting worse.
You can also try taking a omega 3 fatty acid or tumeric supplement. These are inexpensive and both have been shown in medical studies to be as effective at controlling inflammation as well as anti-inflammatories such as Advil.
I wish you well

Best Exercise for Arthritis

Is regular exercise enough to combat mild but chronic rheumatoid arthritis?
I've had RA for ten years, and haven't taken regular medication for the last few, primarily because I began - and stuck with - a regular workout routine supplemented instead by the occasional OTC painkiller. However, I'm only 22, and am wondering how this will affect me into my adult years and then as a senior. I don't want joint damage, but I also don't want a regimen of medication that isn't entirely necessary and could have damaging side-effects. Will exercise always - or ever - be enough to keep my symptoms under control and my joints in the best possible shape?
I'd prefer answers from knowledgeable experts or those with first-hand experience, please. Thank you!
I am both a physical therapist and my GF has had RA for several years. I can tell you that keeping your joints moving is the most critical thing to do. You can do that with regular exercise, focus on resistence training and stretching. One excellent activity to do is Yoga. If you did Yoga (or Pilates) 2-3 times a week that would be extremely benficial. Also if you suspect that things are worsening DO NOT hesitate to go see your rheumatologist ASAP. There are new drugs that can really help people with RA live a perfectly normal life. I see it everyday with my GF. Hope that helps.

Rheumatoid Arthritis And Exercise

I'm 22 years old diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis - Is this you too?
I'm 22 years old and was recently diagnosed with secondary Sjogren's syndrome with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Is anyone else out there like this? I've had symptoms for nearly a decade, and have not started official medication yet. I'm finding it so hard to exercise as fatigue drains every bit of energy I have. Is it normal to have excessive fatigue with RA? It's been really hard for me to cope with this, seeing as how its so rare for someone my age, and I'm just looking for some support.
Any words of advice are greatly appreciated!

Arthritis Exercise Videos

I'm in my late 20's and already have bad Arthritis, what can i do to get better?
I have weird bones. In 2006 i did deep squat while video taping something while on a trip...and stayed in position for about 10 secondss.. suddenly i fetl aweful. thereafter i couldnt walk, and this lasted 8 months. Then slowly got better but not fully.
Recently though i was fine. I was jogging and doing exercise fine but yesterday i just did a fast kick and
i kinda felt pain and a weird sensation that resembled what i felt back when i got injured
I feel a kind of numbness and pain in the bones . sort of like in the space where the thigh bone and shin bone meet..
Well i gueess i have to accept my arthritis but is there anything to relieve it. I mean how could i even strengthen my knees if Knee strengthening requires bending it and putting at least some weight on it.
ive been checked by orthos....and they see nothing abnormal in the xrays .
This time of year is killer on arthritis - my aches and pains have been ten times worse than normal. A few tips:
There's this awesome product called Bio Freeze. You can get it at sporting-goods stores. It's like other topical pain rubs, only this actually works!
One of the best things for arthritis is gentle exercise - swimming is best, but some say the elliptical works (for me, using the elliptical hurts worse than jogging though).
Glucosamine is a supplement you can get in the vitamin aisle and that's supposed to help with joints, as are shark cartilidge, colustrum, and spirulina.
Icing sometimes helps too if the area's inflamed.
Also, see if you can get a doctor to prescribe physical therapy. That actually changed my life. One of the exercises for knees that isn't too painful is to sit on the floor with your legs streached out in front of you. Then, without repositioning your leg, use your thigh muscles to push your knee area down toward the floor. It doesn't hurt at all.
You could also go see a chiropractor.
There's a guy called Shinzun Young who has books and CDs on breaking through the pain by using meditation. I have found that quite helpful.

Rheumatoid Arthritis Diet And Exercise

Rheumatoid Arthritis - Some Great Diet Ideas
When many people are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, they begin searching for ways that will help with this disease. One possible way to control this disease is by using a rheumatoid arthritis diet. This combined with proper exercise, has given people with this chronic disease hope to relieve the pain.
Rheumatoid Arthritis Diet And Exercise Basics
Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto immune disease that affects the joints and sometimes other organs in a patient. The disease can be very progressive, painful and life altering. Researching ways to help improve the lifestyle of a patient suffering from rheumatoid arthritis can include information in regards to a rheumatoid arthritis diet and exercise plan.
Since the joints are affected by this disease, keeping the patients body in shape is important to maintain the patients well being. As part of an arthritis diet plan, exercise is an important key to the patient's health. Exercise can help keep range of motion in the joints that can become restricted due to the disease.
It is important in this step of a rheumatoid arthritis diet to begin with simple exercises that won't harm the joints. Relaxed and easy motions are the best for someone with rheumatoid arthritis. Swimming is an excellent choice in a rheumatoid arthritis diet plan, it is easy on the joints and for many a good whole body work out. Finding a low impact exercise for the patient with rheumatoid arthritis can make the difference in preventing injuries.
The rheumatoid arthritis diet can include a variety of different tactics. Some suggest a rheumatoid arthritis diet be rich in vegetables and low in gluten can help reduce the symptoms and pain of rheumatoid arthritis. A rheumatoid arthritis diet that is primarily made up of protein provided by a diet rich in fish may help some patients. Fish oil can be taken in a supplement form to add this important dietary necessity to the rheumatoid arthritis diet.
Foods that should be avoided in a rheumatoid arthritis diet include foods from the nightshade family like, tomatoes, potatoes, green peppers and eggplant. There is no scientific proof of this, but many people believe their symptoms improve when these foods are avoided. Decaffeinated coffee may cause symptoms to worsen and should be avoided in a rheumatoid arthritis diet.
Researchers a re consistently trying to find ways to improve the health of people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Patients are also trying to find simple ways to help themselves; and, a rheumatoid arthritis diet may be the best place to start.
