Exercise For People With Arthritis

Thinking about exercise and arthritis? It is not uncommon for people to show their horror at this thought. For many years it was believed that arthritis and exercise doesnt go hand in hand. However a recent study has revealed that exercise can in fact help people with arthritis. Additionally exercise is becoming a vital tool in managing arthritis. Regular exercise helps in improving the flexibility of the joints, decreasing pain and rigidity in the joints. It also helps in improving the general muscular structure of the body. Besides it brings extra benefits as well which includes, better overall fitness, more self-esteem and lower levels of depression. This article aims to deal with several exercise approaches that can be used by arthritis patients to get pain relief and manage arthritis more effectively.

Range of motion exercises involves trying to move the joints in all possible directions. It is more of a gentle exercise. It needs to be carried out on a regular basis in order to decrease the rigidity of the joints and avoid deformities. This exercise becomes more important for arthritis patients who tend to avoid much joint movement due to high inflammatory pain. It is believed by some people that normal day activities like dressing, bathing, housework are a substitute for ROM exercises; however this is not the case.

Strengthening exercises are used in everyday life to improve the muscular structure of the body, which allows the body to withstand pain more easily. Similar arthritis patients can use this exercise to help build strong muscles, which will lead to more stable joints and less pain. This type of exercise comes in two packages, which includes isotonic and isometric. Isometric exercises are used in conditions where the joint motion is impaired. It involves tightening the muscles without moving the joints. Isotonic on the other hand, involves tightening the muscles in coordination with joint movements.

Endurance exercises involve bringing the heart beat level of your heart to an optimal level for a short period of time. This optimal level of heart performance is acquired on the basis of the patients age and physical condition using computer. It helps in improving the cardiovascular fitness. In order to increase the effectiveness of these exercises, these shall be undertaken around 3 times a week. Carrying out theses exercises helps patients achieve better physical strength and improve mental attitude.

There are several exercises that be can undertaken by an arthritis patient. Walking is an ideal choice. It helps in building strength and improves mobility of the joints. It is also helpful for maintaining bone health. Similarly running can bring about pain relief to arthritis patients. Research has shown that running on soft surfaces doesnt cause osteoarthritis. This is a good option for people suffering from less extreme version of arthritis.

Yoga has long been an ultimate exercise for arthritis patients. Yoga can help bring relief to joints, decrease pain and relax muscles. It is also a good range-of-motion exercise as it includes controlled movements, maintaining pressures, and deep breathing relaxation. However this exercise must be carefully used if the condition is getting worse rapidly and try not to put pressure on the inflamed joints. Cycling can be used as a low level exercise option. This exercise can be carried in either position; freestanding or stationary. Additionally, cycling equipment can be fixed and altered according to the condition of the patient, in order to make the experience easier and less physically imposing.

The aforementioned exercises give an insight into possible ways of improving the health of patients suffering from arthritis. In order to effectives of each technique it is essential to be consistent. The exercise shall be started on a low note and then build up gradually in order to allow the body to adjust to the outside pressure. Also it is important to keep in mind, that each exercise shall be carried within its own limit. Excess exercise during flare-ups can worsen symptoms.

However before the exercise is undertaken, it is important to contact your nearest doctor and seek professional advice as each case of arthritis shall be dealt on an individual basis. This can be help in seeking a more effective approach to this condition.

I have arthritis in my knees & I get migraines easily - help with exercise ideas?

I can not run due to the arthritis in my knees, swimming is out of the question due to financial reasons - so I walk, but that gets boring. So any ideas for other cardio would be great. Also - need to work on abs but get migraines whenever I do sit-ups. Yes I have had aerobic instructors watch me do them & they say that I am doing them right & not pulling on my neck, etc... but still get migraines anyway. Also get migraines with strenuous cardio workouts. I really want to lose weight, but it just seems that there are obstacles around every corner. So any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I'm looking for the Arthritis Foundation, for a grant so they can help me?

I don't have enough income to pay for the 20% that Medicare doesn't pay, so that I can have physical therapy, along with water excercises. My income is at the poverty level, and I can't afford the 'price' starting out at 3 times per week, of which I would have to pay approximately $180.00 per month. And that doesn't count my transporation cost either, which is $2.00 each way, on the Handi Wheels bus for the handicapped. At this time, I'm without any form of exercise. Thank you for the chance to explain my situation to you.

Have you tried applying for Medicaid? Medicaid can help with the copays. You can apply for it on the state website or by going to the local welfare/Department of Human Resources. The number should be in the blue pages of your telephone book.

PostHeaderIcon Is Exercise Good for Arthritis

is exercise good for arthritis
I have arthritis and walking is not on. What else can I do other than ride an exercise bike to lose weight?

My knees are stuffed, so walking isnt a good option for me, but I can ride a bike. I have a road bike and have just bought an exercise bike, so I can use it day or night, rain, hail or shine. I am trying to lose more weight. Given my limitations, is there anything else I could be doing at home to accelerate my loss. I am eating sensibly. Thank you.

I have found that biking, while good exersise, is hard on my knees, and when you are old, a fall can be devastating. I also found that exercise bikes come boring. What worked best for my arthritis in exercise was to find a low-cost fitness center. I would like to recommend Planet Fitness, as they have great rates ($10 per month, free personal training), and have outlets in most cities. You get a chance to have an exercise program tailored just for you, meet a lot of interesting people, and get in shape without being run off the run by cars or chased by dogs.

PostHeaderIcon Exercise Hip Arthritis

exercise hip arthritis
arthritis and bursitis?

okay the doc said i have arthritis in my lower back around my tailbone (he says not too bad) and the orthepedic specialist said i have bursitis on yhe top of my right hip. I am very active throughout the day (in military). no matter how much exercise i do my back is very stiff to the point where i can barely bend over to touch my knees. my hip really hurts not every day but lately yes its seems its bothering my left hip too. he said it is slight arthritis...my question is to anyone with arthritis even though my arthritis isnt that bad is my stiffness n pain going to be different that anyone elses ? cuz i think he thinks i'm faking the pain n stiffness....

See the doctor and ask for a referral to physical therapy. They should be able to help you with both issues. Bursitis is an inflammation of a sack of fluid that the body uses to keep different parts from rubbing. So the therapist will use ultrasound on the bursa to help reduce the amount of fluid that is in there. They can also use ice on the area which will also help but it will also depend on the depth of the bursa. As for the arthritis they will also help there. There are things that you can do on your own to help matters. One if you are carrying a little more weight than you should drop it. The extra weight is hard on the back. For every one pound of extra weight that you carry the back has to deal with forces that are equal to ten pounds. Flexibility is also important and here is where the therapist is important. They will be able to identify areas where you are weak and tight. Once these areas are corrected then much of the pain will decrease. Most people with lower back problems have tightness and weakness in the hamstrings and dysproportional strength in the calves. These are areas that should be addressed. Strength in the gluteals and back should also be strengthen. When standing squeeze the buttocks as hard as possible. This helps to stabilize the pelvis and reduce pain. Everyone's pain levels are different. The same stimuli to one person can be overwhelming and to another it is nothing. Military doctors have a tendency to think everyone just wants a pass from doing their duty for the day or week. For the hip try doing this stretch. Stand straight and cross one foot over the other in such a way as to place the crossed foot about eight to twelve inches further to the side. Now lean to the side of the crossed foot. There should be a stretch going through the hip. Hold that position for a count of ten and then relax. Do that cycle four more times and then reverse legs. As for the lower back lie on your back. Bring one knee up into the chest and bear hug it into the chest. Hold that for ten and relax but don't let the leg go back to the ground. Repeat that cycle four more times and then return the leg to the floor. Bring up the opposite leg and bear hug that into the chest as before five times. On the last rep do not return the leg but have the opposite leg come up and meet the leg. Bear hug both legs into the chest for a count of ten. Relax but don't allow the legs to return to the floor. Bear hug the knees into the chest four more times. On the last one only bring one leg down to the floor. Place the foot on the floor so that the knee is flexed to 90 degrees. Bring the opposite leg down to meet it. Slowly rock the knees from side to side as many times as you feel comfortable. That should help to relax the back. Doing crunches should also help to stabilize the pelvis. Use ice on both areas for about fifteen minutes every hour if possible.

hip arthritis and exercise
I have mild arthritis in my hip should I continue with Karate?

I enjoy Karate, I've only been going one month ( twice a week) but since going I now have hip pain which makes it painful to sit for long periods of time and when I get up from sitting I can just about move. I thought exercise was suppose to be good for you.

Exercise is one of the most important things you can do when you have arthritis. Inactivity only makes arthritis pain worse.

Some times when starting a new exercise program like karate that uses muscles and joints in ways they are not use to can cause pain in areas like your hip joints. This should improve over time.

Also are you exercising other than your karate lessons. Exercising only twice a week can add to your problem. If you have a public pool near you warm water exercise might help you a lot. It allows you to strengthen the supporting muscles in your hip area that are not used in karate. It also does it in a way that does not put pressure or impact to hip joints. Just walking laps around the shallow end of the pool should help alot.

You should talk to your doctor about your pain to make sure that there is not some thing new going on or that the arthritis is not getting worse.

You can also try taking a omega 3 fatty acid or tumeric supplement. These are inexpensive and both have been shown in medical studies to be as effective at controlling inflammation as well as anti-inflammatories such as Advil.

I wish you well

I've had RA for ten years, and haven't taken regular medication for the last few, primarily because I began - and stuck with - a regular workout routine supplemented instead by the occasional OTC painkiller. However, I'm only 22, and am wondering how this will affect me into my adult years and then as a senior. I don't want joint damage, but I also don't want a regimen of medication that isn't entirely necessary and could have damaging side-effects. Will exercise always - or ever - be enough to keep my symptoms under control and my joints in the best possible shape?

I'd prefer answers from knowledgeable experts or those with first-hand experience, please. Thank you!

I am both a physical therapist and my GF has had RA for several years. I can tell you that keeping your joints moving is the most critical thing to do. You can do that with regular exercise, focus on resistence training and stretching. One excellent activity to do is Yoga. If you did Yoga (or Pilates) 2-3 times a week that would be extremely benficial. Also if you suspect that things are worsening DO NOT hesitate to go see your rheumatologist ASAP. There are new drugs that can really help people with RA live a perfectly normal life. I see it everyday with my GF. Hope that helps.

Leslie Sansone's Walk and Firm for Older Adults [VHS]

Jane Fonda on Valium--that's what Leslie Sansone seems like in Walk & Firm for Older Adults. But that's a good thing, especially if you're the "older" person this half-hour is aimed at. Sansone takes you through her gentle in-home walking program with a peppy (but not too chipper) spirit on a set that looks like a barely furnished living room. She doesn't bother with a cast of dozens--it's ju...

rheumatoid arthritis and exercise
I'm 22 years old diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis - Is this you too?

I'm 22 years old and was recently diagnosed with secondary Sjogren's syndrome with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Is anyone else out there like this? I've had symptoms for nearly a decade, and have not started official medication yet. I'm finding it so hard to exercise as fatigue drains every bit of energy I have. Is it normal to have excessive fatigue with RA? It's been really hard for me to cope with this, seeing as how its so rare for someone my age, and I'm just looking for some support.

Any words of advice are greatly appreciated!

This easy-to-use tool will help you to better communicate with your physician about your rheumatoid arthritis symptoms. Doctor visits can be overwhelming, and this Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms Assessor could help you make the most of your conversation.

Take an important step in answering questions about your symptoms. In just a few minutes, you can create your own symptom profile to print and share with your health care professional. It's easy, and it's the first step to greater understanding.
