What exercise can be done by a young person with a shoulder and knee joint pain/arthritis?
I Cant do any upper body exercise due to my right shoulder and cant do any lower body exercise due to the knee problem. I tried swimming but it too causes shoulder pain. Have tried different doctors and physiotherapy without any success.......I AM JUST 34 YEARS OLD. HOW WILL I LIVE THE REST OF MY LIFE WITHOUT EXERCISE???, I will probably die young due to lack of exercise. this is very frustrating.
You might look into Aquajogging, running in place floating in the pool with a foam belt for bouyancy. Lance Armstrong does it to improve his power. Lots of track athletes do it as well. No impact and it is low speed, so it should be easy on the knee. Or just trying kicking with a kickboard, either with arms extended or kickboard hugged to your chest, and do flutter kick, your knees will stay pretty much straight.
You could do lots of sit-ups and core work as well? You might just have to learn to deal with some pain in anything you do, as hard as that is. Is a little pain worth more years on the life? Sounds like a frustrating situation, hope you can find something that works for you.

Sansone takes you through her gentle in-home walking program with a peppy (but not too chipper) spirit on a set that looks like a barely furnished living room. She doesn't bother with a cast of dozens--it's ju... |

Arthritis Exercise Equipment

Staying Flexible With Exercise And Health Supplements
Arthritis is a debilitating condition for many people. Lots of new people are diagnosed with this terrible condition each year. Arthritis is defined as the inflammation of a joint, but it can certainly seem more painful than that. It can cause searing pain that leaves the body feeling weak for days. As people age, arthritis tends to develop from the extended every day uses of the body. Other things though can help the development of arthritis. Being overweight, having bad posture, and serious injuries can all speed the development of this condition. Arthritis can cause the cartilage to wear out and thin. The rubbing of the bones causes irritation and inflammation. While this pain can sometimes be relieved through rest, the patient can also sometimes experience pain that seems never ending. Exercise, though, can assist with arthritis by strengthening the muscles near the joint which helps reduce joint stress. While exercise is necessary for everyone, it is essential for those with arthritis. While it is probably not a good idea to engage in the most rigorous forms of exercise with arthritis, physical activity is not out of the question. For those without arthritis, exercise can help prevent this horrible disease.
There are several exercises that can help maintain joint health. Bicycling tends to be very helpful to most joints, and it can be done by people of all ages. Stretching is another exercise related activity that can help with joints. Stretching every day can add flexibility. Stair climbing can strengthen the lower body joints. One of the best things about stair climbing is the fact that stairs are everywhere and free to climb. Swimming is a great way to warm up all of your joints. Water aerobics is even better. This is one of the best possible exercises for people who are already experiencing joint pain, as the water cushions the movement and causes no pain.
Exercise is not the only way to strengthen joints. There are several other everyday things you can do to help your joints. You can start by ensuring you are at your ideal body weight. Obesity or even being a few pounds overweight causes undue wear and tear on your joints. Stress in the joints only leads to pain in future years. You should also watch your posture. Appropriate body posture can protect the joints from unnecessary stress. When you must lift or carry something heavy, use your legs. This can help take the stress away from your smallest joints and muscles. Be sure to build in rest periods. Too much activity at any one time is not good for your delicate joints and muscles. Pay attention to what your body has to say. If you feel tired, rest. If you are in pain, stop what you are doing. Ignoring your body can only lead to overuse and injury. Staying in one place for long periods of time causes your muscles to shorten and stiffen. Move around as often as possible. Start slowly and build gradually. Your body needs time to acclimate to new activities. If you plan to engage in a dangerous activity, wear safety equipment. Knee pads while you are roller-blading can help reduce damage in a fall. If a job is too big for you, be sure to ask for help. Carrying too much weight or reaching too high causes further stress to your joints.
There are also several health supplements that promise to assist with joint health. While not all are the miracles they claim to be, few cause any side effects. Glucosamine and chondroitin are used to build cartilage. Taking it as a supplement is supposed to help your joints heal. It, however, can take at least 2 - 4 months before it can take effect. Side effects, though, can include increased insulin levels, so diabetics should avoid it altogether. Omega 3 fatty acids reduce joint problems. They can be found in fish and flax seed oil. However, it can interact with medications, so consult your doctor first. SAM, which is S-adenosyl-methionine, can be used to build other coenzymes like dopamine or glucosamine. It both rebuilds and protects joints, but it changes the properties of any psychoactive medication you may be on, including antidepressants. As always, check with your doctor before you take anything he hasn't prescribed.

Arthritis Exercise Program

Exercise Program For Me.?
So im 15, Male , and about 5"6, 140. I need and exercises program that will help me lose about 10-15 pounds and build muscle. I go to school and usually eat dinner at about 6:00. So, if you could come up with a great exercise program that would be great! Keep in mind i don't have any machines and i have arthritis in my wrists(lol, that's what i get for cracking them all the time), and i cant go for runs!
Thank You, p.s, i cant do diets, my mom isnt willing to cook healthy food haha!
Oh also, haha i dont really have fat all over me, its mainly my stomach area, and legs! thanx! i wanna at least feel comfetable taking my shirt of at the beach! THanx!
Write down your weekly goals, and make them realistic. Plan to exercise 3 times a week as your goal. If you do it 4 times, then you've really made extra progress. Reward yourself for the achievements. (It can be as little as a chart with gold stars, or as great as a new piece of clothing.) Think of this as positive moves to your goal! You'll feel better physically and mentally.
i would suggest for exercising: Running, Dancing, Swimming, biking, hiking, walking, anything that will get your heart ♥ pumping
when you want a snack grab a piece of fruit instead of chips and junk food.
if you are going to eat junk food don't go overboard limit your portions (that goes for all meals)
try this:
drink 8 glasses of water
have 6 servings of the rice-pasta-cereal-bread group
3 servings of vegetables
2 servings of fruits
3 servings of dairy
2 servings of the meat-poultry-fish-beans-nuts group\

Arthritis in Knees And Exercise
Women: young, arthritis, fatigue, exercising, and overweight w/no results?
I'm 29 years old and was an active person until about 4 years ago. I've been diagosed w/ Lupus and Rhematoid Arthritis now just Mild Arthritis in my shoulders, back, arms, knees and ankles. My blood tests now do not show what they did years past but through moving a new doctor says basically I'm just fat and need to lose weight. I'm 5'10 and about 25lbs over my BMI normal range. I admit I'm overweight but I'm trying, I've been exercising (on days it's not too cold) but even then I walk on the treadmil (can't run have no balance-get dizzy), get on exercise bike and lift weights for an hour. I'm watching what I eat, 100% whole wheat bread, vegetables, lots of protein, water-no sodas; do have lots of stress thought -ADHD child, deployed husband; any one been/going through the same any suggestions on exercises, meals, life changes?
Do diet pills, Thank you
i am also overweight, but a little older than you with 3 kids.
i tried everything to lose the weight and was having a very difficult time. my joints hurt, it was hard to breathe at times and i was always tired.
my doctor tested my thyroid (a simple blood test) and discovered that i have hypothyroid disorder (this slows your motabolism down)
now i take one small pill a day and exercise a little, and try to watch what i eat and the pounds are just melting away.....about at the rate of 5 or more pounds a month.
i have more energy and feel great!
so, i would suggest asking your doctor about testing your thyroid and also about depression as your description sounds like it could be either one or possibly something else.
dont settle for only getting your syptoms treated, you need to find out what is the underlying cause of your symptoms.
good luck to you

Knee Arthritis And Exercise

What are the best foods to eat to lose weight fast (along with exercise)and still not be hungry?
I am getting older and wish to drop about 40 to 50 lbs. Should I lift weights or walk ? . I have a bad knee (arthritis) and can't walk for that long without it being very painful. And, is there a web site for seniors who want to begin a weight lifting program?. I know this is a lot but I just can't seem to find out any other way.
You should do a combination of lifting weights and walking for maximum fat loss!! If walking for long periods hurts you, consider breaking it up, like walking a little in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening.
As far as food goes, some good foods to lose weight and still be full are whole wheat toast with a little peanut butter, bananas, almonds (just the serving size), plain oatmeal with fruit or peanut butter mixed in, lean proteins like chicken and fish (not breaded) It's also best to eat 5-6 little meals throughout the day, which makes you less likely to get hungry.
Good luck!

Exercises for Knee Arthritis

What would be a recommended form of exercise for someone with osteo-arthritis?
I have been told that swimming is good (crawl rather than breaststroke) as it is a weightbearing exercise. Apparently anything else seems to potentialy exacerbate the problem: Cycling is bad for the knees, any form of running, jumping, skipping etc. is too load bearing again. What about trampolining? Any other ideas?
Apparently Bob, breaststroke is bad for the hands and knees because the joints are rotated/twisted in this swimming style - hence the suggestion about front crawl...
A physiotherapist will be the right person to ask for a particular case.
There is no better answer than that. He needs to check the state of the person. How are their lungs? Has done exercises in the past? Does it have any current cardiovascular problem? Have been in a surgery? So many questions for one particular case. A professional will check all before recommending. ok?
As for general knowledge water exercises are good for old people that want to gain some strength in bones.

Exercises for Hip Arthritis

How Common is Hip Arthritis?
Hip Arthritis
What is the primary form of hip arthritis?
An average of 8 per cent of the population develops rheumatoid arthritis and 12 per cent from osteoarthritis, making arthritis in all its forms one of the most universal disorders in the West. Arthritis by itself is a $10 billion industry.
Osteoarthritis appears to be the most general type of arthritis affecting the hip? This is a degeneration of the joint which is called -wear-and-tear arthritis. This condition is recognized by progressive eroding of the hip joint cartilage. As the cartilage is impaired by the damaging effects of hip arthritis, the bone lay bare and is exposed inside the joint.
What are the common characteristics of hip arthritis?
Symptoms of hip arthritis seem to evolve as the disease worsens. An fascinating fact with arthritis affecting the hip is that not all symptoms get worse progressively over time. Quite often, patients report good episodes and bad episodes and that symptoms fluctuate with changes in the weather. This information is important to understand because evaluating the symptoms of hip arthritis from one day to the next cannot correctly represent the overall deterioration of the arthritic disease.
The common characteristics of hip arthritis include:
-Pain with mobility
-Limited field of motion
-Rigidity in the hip
-An apparent limp when walking
Who develops hip arthritis?
Hip arthritis often inflicts patients over 50 years of age. It is more common in women and men who are overweight. Weight reduction helps to diminish the symptoms connected with hip arthritis. There is also a inherited predisposition of this disease; meaning hip arthritis tends to run in families. Additional dynamics that may contribute to developing hip arthritis include stress to the hip and fractures to the bone surrounding the joint.
What treatment is available for hip arthritis?
Management for hip arthritis must start with the simplest procedures, and work towards the other more involved, maybe even including surgery. Not every treatment is suitable for all patients, and we recommend that you make an appointment with your health practitioner to determine which remedies are the best solution for your arthritic hip condition.
-Weight Loss
This is undoubltedly a very critical remedy, yet it is actually the least frequently prescribed treatments. When the joint sustains less weight, all activities will become less {{{painful|agonizing|unpleasant}}.
-Walking Aids
If you use either a cane or one crutch in the opposite hand of the affected hip, it will help cut back the demand on the affected joint.
-Physical Therapy
Strengthening and toning muscles surrounding hip joints might help decrease the extra weight on the hip. Protecting against atrophy involving the muscles is a vital aspect in maintaining functional flexibility of the hip joint.
-Activity Modification
Limiting certain activities may be required, and learning new exercise methods may be helpful. Aquatic exercise is an excellent option for patients who have difficulty with mobility.
-Anti-Inflammatory Medications Anti-inflammatory remedies (NSAIDs) are usually prescribed. Nonprescription drugs help in pain treatment, and reduce inflammation.
-Joint Supplements (Glucosamine)
Glucosamine seems to be non-toxic and may be successful in management of arthritis. Unfortunately, study involving joint supplements has been rather insufficient.
-Complete Hip Replacement Surgery
During this surgical procedure, the cartilage will be removed, then a metal and plastic implant is inserted in the hip area.
Evaluation of a patient with hip arthritis must begin with a physical assessment and X-Rays. These can serve as a theory to assess further examinations and determine deterioration of this condition.

Exercise Arthritis

Arthritis Diet and Exercises for Arthritis Pain Relief
Diet and exercise are an important part of overall health. In many diseases, your diet can affect the frequency and severity of your symptoms. There are many foods that can trigger the onset of arthritis symptoms. Extra weight can also increase the onset of arthritis symptoms. If you suffer from arthritis, it is important that you maintain a healthy weight in order to decrease the onset of symptoms. If you are overweight, this will cause extra pressure on joints such as the spine, hips, and knees – the main joints that support your body.
In order to manage your arthritis, it is essential to maintain a healthy diet. Studies have shown that the best arthritis diet for most patients is one that is low in protein and high in carbohydrates. Fruits and vegetables should be an important part of your arthritis diet because of the vitamin content. As with many illnesses, there are also foods that can trigger arthritis symptoms and should be avoided.
Foods to Avoid in Arthritis
The following foods can trigger the onset of symptoms and should be eliminated from your arthritis diet – or used as little as possible:
• Milk and dairy products
• Flour
• Sugar
• Red meat
• Butter and margarine
• Chocolate
• Sugar
• Foods containing sugar – such as syrup, honey, and jelly
• Caffeine
• White potatoes
• Red peppers
• Salt – use as little as possible
• Wheat flour
• Bran
Foods that are beneficial in Arthritis
As well as foods that may trigger symptoms, there are also foods that are beneficial to your arthritis diet. These foods can help to decrease the onset of arthritis symptoms:
• Apples – great inflammatory fruit
• Blackberries
• Kiwi fruit
• Peaches
• Mango
• Cantaloupe
• Strawberries
• Other fruits high in vitamin C
• Sardines
• Herring
• Salmon
• Mackerel
• Tuna
• Trout
• Other oily fishes that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E
• Broccoli
• Cabbage
• Spinach
• Brussels sprouts
• Sweet potatoes
• Carrots
• Collard greens
• Squash
• Other vegetables that are high in Vitamin A and Vitamin C
• Sunflower seeds
• Linseeds
• Pumpkin seeds
• Walnuts
• Brazil nuts
• Almonds
• Brown rice
• Whole wheat bread
• Chick peas
• Lentils
• Ginger
• Garlic
• Turmeric
A Balanced Diet for Arthritis
It is necessary to maintain a healthy, balanced arthritis diet for your overall health and to decrease the symptoms of arthritis. Many foods can trigger the inflammation associated with arthritis – and these foods should be avoided as often as possible. With any diet, portion size is one of the key ingredients to a successful diet. Some foods on the avoid list can be consumed in small quantities without adverse effects. It is important that you eat a variety of foods – fruits, vegetables, breads, and meats.
Different types of foods have different nutritional values and a combination is important in order to obtain the greatest benefits from these foods. Some things can be successfully consumed in moderation, such as alcohol, sodium, and sugar. As with any diet, you should avoid too much fat and cholesterol. Be sure your arthritis diet includes foods that will help with your overall health by providing the necessary vitamins and that your diet will help you to maintain a healthy weight. Pay attention to portion sizes and avoid overeating, which can cause you to feel less energetic and can cause you to gain extra weight, which will increase the pressure on the joints.
Arthritis Exercises
Along with a healthy arthritis diet, a regular exercise regimen is essential for your overall health. Exercise can help to keep the joints from stiffening and can decrease the onset of stiffness and inflammation associated with arthritis. It is important that you maintain a healthy lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise – not only for your overall health, but to help in the management of your arthritis symptoms.

Ankle Arthritis Exercises

Introduction To Ankle Arthritis
While ankle arthritis may be one of the less common types of arthritis,it is a very painful one for those who suffer from it and who are getting older. There are a number of causes of ankle arthritis, and a case of this condition can often be pointed to a specific event or injury. This means that if you suffer an injury to your ankle in your earlier years of life, arthritis is a condition that you should be on the lookout for as you age. The good news is that there are a number of possible treatment options for this condition, and they can range from changing your footwear to a variety of surgical options. Your medical adviser will be the best source of information in diagnosing and treating your ankle arthritis.
Causes
There are a number of reasons why you might be diagnosed with ankle arthritis, and one of the most common is a previous injury to the area, such as a sprain or fracture. These types of injuries can lead to damaged cartilage in the ankle, and may result in accelerated arthritis in the joint as well. It is also possible to develop arthritis in your ankle if you are overweight and placing undue stress on the joints. One more cause of ankle arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis that can spread to any of the joints of the body, including the ankle joint.
Symptoms
Symptoms of ankle arthritis include pain, stiffness and swelling around the ankle joint. You may also notice that you develop bone spurs in the area, or that the joint itself becomes deformed. Another symptom of this type of arthritis is the feeling that the joint will give out, or you may feel that you are not completely stable on your legs. If you are noticing any of these symptoms, you should talk to your doctor about the possibility that you have ankle arthritis and begin weighing your treatment options.
Treatment
Treatment for ankle arthritis can range from gentle strengthening exercises, to medication and cortisone injections, and even surgery in some cases. One of the first treatments that you can try is a simple modification of your footwear. Most who suffer from ankle arthritis find relief from the pain by simply using cushioned insoles inside of their shoes. If a simple process like this does not help to ease your discomfort, your doctor can advise you in the use of anti-inflammatory medications and may prescribe cortisone shots for particularly high pain. In some cases, surgery will be the best treatment for ankle arthritis, and this can range from arthroscopy to fusion surgical procedures.
If you suspect that you might be suffering from ankle arthritis, talk to your doctor today about a diagnosis and your treatment options. You will be glad you did.

Arthritis Diet And Exercise

I need to lose 30 pounds, how to do it?
I'm 16 years old and 130 pounds, but I'm only 5'0.
I have been recovering from a chronic illness which has been present for the last 4 years. During this time, my immune system weakened a lot, and my metabolism is at an all time low. I also have a condition where my collagen is disformed, and has led to arthritis. (But that isn't stopping me from losing the weight, I'll try any exercise!) I was basically on bed rest this whole time, and went from 100 lbs to 130 lbs. Now that I'm feeling better, I need to lose it!
My parents are freaking out trying to get me to drop the weight, but they aren't helping me at all! I've been trying everything, from exercise to diet plans, but nothings working!
How should I lose 30 lbs? Any exercise plans? Diet plans?
My mom tried the South Beach Diet. You are supposed to eat a healthy snack every 3 hours between mealtimes. This is because your metabolism slows down in between meals but the snack keeps it up and running, making it easier to lose calories.I suggest that you drink lots of water, preferably 8 cups a day, and maybe get some fiber powder. If you don't or can't get powder, try these foods.
* Legumes (lentils, dry beans and peas)
* Other vegetables
* Fruits
* Brown rice
* Whole grains (wheat, oats, barley)
They help you digest your food and prevent many diseases, making you healthier. This allows you to exercise more, creating more weight loss.Trying a sport, jumping on a trampoline, swimming, and jogging are all good ways to get active. You could join one of those weight loss sites such as weight watchers for encouragement. You could also try and see how long you can exercise.Play with a younger cousin or sibling to make their day better and your too!

Arthritis And Exercise

Exercise For People With Arthritis
Thinking about exercise and arthritis? It is not uncommon for people to show their horror at this thought. For many years it was believed that arthritis and exercise doesnt go hand in hand. However a recent study has revealed that exercise can in fact help people with arthritis. Additionally exercise is becoming a vital tool in managing arthritis. Regular exercise helps in improving the flexibility of the joints, decreasing pain and rigidity in the joints. It also helps in improving the general muscular structure of the body. Besides it brings extra benefits as well which includes, better overall fitness, more self-esteem and lower levels of depression. This article aims to deal with several exercise approaches that can be used by arthritis patients to get pain relief and manage arthritis more effectively.
Range of motion exercises involves trying to move the joints in all possible directions. It is more of a gentle exercise. It needs to be carried out on a regular basis in order to decrease the rigidity of the joints and avoid deformities. This exercise becomes more important for arthritis patients who tend to avoid much joint movement due to high inflammatory pain. It is believed by some people that normal day activities like dressing, bathing, housework are a substitute for ROM exercises; however this is not the case.
Strengthening exercises are used in everyday life to improve the muscular structure of the body, which allows the body to withstand pain more easily. Similar arthritis patients can use this exercise to help build strong muscles, which will lead to more stable joints and less pain. This type of exercise comes in two packages, which includes isotonic and isometric. Isometric exercises are used in conditions where the joint motion is impaired. It involves tightening the muscles without moving the joints. Isotonic on the other hand, involves tightening the muscles in coordination with joint movements.
Endurance exercises involve bringing the heart beat level of your heart to an optimal level for a short period of time. This optimal level of heart performance is acquired on the basis of the patients age and physical condition using computer. It helps in improving the cardiovascular fitness. In order to increase the effectiveness of these exercises, these shall be undertaken around 3 times a week. Carrying out theses exercises helps patients achieve better physical strength and improve mental attitude.
There are several exercises that be can undertaken by an arthritis patient. Walking is an ideal choice. It helps in building strength and improves mobility of the joints. It is also helpful for maintaining bone health. Similarly running can bring about pain relief to arthritis patients. Research has shown that running on soft surfaces doesnt cause osteoarthritis. This is a good option for people suffering from less extreme version of arthritis.
Yoga has long been an ultimate exercise for arthritis patients. Yoga can help bring relief to joints, decrease pain and relax muscles. It is also a good range-of-motion exercise as it includes controlled movements, maintaining pressures, and deep breathing relaxation. However this exercise must be carefully used if the condition is getting worse rapidly and try not to put pressure on the inflamed joints. Cycling can be used as a low level exercise option. This exercise can be carried in either position; freestanding or stationary. Additionally, cycling equipment can be fixed and altered according to the condition of the patient, in order to make the experience easier and less physically imposing.
The aforementioned exercises give an insight into possible ways of improving the health of patients suffering from arthritis. In order to effectives of each technique it is essential to be consistent. The exercise shall be started on a low note and then build up gradually in order to allow the body to adjust to the outside pressure. Also it is important to keep in mind, that each exercise shall be carried within its own limit. Excess exercise during flare-ups can worsen symptoms.
However before the exercise is undertaken, it is important to contact your nearest doctor and seek professional advice as each case of arthritis shall be dealt on an individual basis. This can be help in seeking a more effective approach to this condition.

Exercise Knee Arthritis

I have arthritis in my knees & I get migraines easily - help with exercise ideas?
I can not run due to the arthritis in my knees, swimming is out of the question due to financial reasons - so I walk, but that gets boring. So any ideas for other cardio would be great. Also - need to work on abs but get migraines whenever I do sit-ups. Yes I have had aerobic instructors watch me do them & they say that I am doing them right & not pulling on my neck, etc... but still get migraines anyway. Also get migraines with strenuous cardio workouts. I really want to lose weight, but it just seems that there are obstacles around every corner. So any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
